Harry Malesovas

Under the name C.H.U.M. Harry Malesovas creates sculptures, paintings and drawings which tackle the idea that humans are more than a single story.

His work utilizes free associative techniques, allowing him to meditate on specific moments from his past and present to draw the imagery that fill his pieces. Most of Harry’s early childhood he repressed many of the emotions he felt besides happiness until he reached a point in which he could no longer hold in his bottled feelings. This unhealthy coping technique finally subsided after attending sessions with an art therapist, who gave him the skills to unearth his feelings and confront them.

Harry’s monstrous forms are used to personify the fear he associated with the introspection needed to fully understand his feelings. Harry is inspired by Horror Vacui and Gestalt Principles to fill his works with a menagerie of images which attract the eye up close but blend into a central figure after taking a step back. From afar his monsters can seem like one large figure and a single conclusion may be drawn about them; just as it can with people. However, after closer examination of his work, it is evident that there is far more detail that makes up the whole, like how the details of our distinct experiences and emotions make up our inner selves.
